Security Systems in Manchester, NH

Security that fits a Manchester property: shared entrances, older wiring, busy storefronts and the people who use them.

Cunningham Security designs, installs and supports security alarms, cameras and access control for Manchester homes and businesses. Start with what needs to happen when a door opens, a delivery arrives or the last employee leaves. That makes the proposal more useful than choosing a package by device count alone.

Start with the entrances you actually use

Manchester’s housing mix makes ownership and access responsibilities especially relevant. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 estimates put owner occupancy at 48.7% of occupied housing units. In a rental or multifamily property, decide whether the project protects one apartment, landlord-controlled common space or the entire building before selecting equipment.

  • Single-family home: identify the garage-to-house door, basement entry and the route used at night. Perimeter protection can remain active while occupants move inside.
  • Multifamily building: coordinate common-door hardware, resident credentials and contractor access. An apartment alarm should not treat normal activity in a shared hallway as an intrusion.
  • Storefront or professional office: separate public hours from employee-only access, stockroom protection and closing checks.

For a landlord, a documented process for issuing and removing credentials is often more valuable than adding another camera to an already visible lobby. For a homeowner, a clear entry routine may prevent more nuisance alarms than an extra motion detector.

Manchester requires a security alarm permit

The Manchester Police alarm-permit page says burglary, robbery and panic alarm users need a permit, including systems that only sound an audible warning. The city uses CryWolf for registration, annual permits, account updates and false-alarm records. Permit-account questions go to 877-263-6026.

Put permit ownership on the installation checklist: who registers, which address and unit identify the protected premises, and who maintains the emergency contacts? A business with staff turnover should review both its alarm users and its call list. A new tenant should not assume the previous occupant’s information is still appropriate.

We build user training into the system discussion. Cleaners, family members and opening staff need a routine they can follow reliably. A recurring alarm deserves a cause review—door alignment, sensor environment, programming or user workflow—rather than repeated resets.

What Manchester crime figures tell a property owner

The police department’s 2025 annual report recorded 106 burglaries, 1,635 larceny/theft offenses and 149 motor vehicle thefts. Larceny includes shoplifting and theft from buildings and vehicles, so those categories describe different problems. The Manchester Police website also provides interactive crime information. Its non-emergency number is 603-668-8711.

The practical question is what evidence or alert would help at your property. A retail owner may need a usable view of a transaction and an exit. A homeowner concerned about a driveway needs camera positioning suited to that driveway, with nighttime lighting considered. Citywide totals cannot establish the risk of a particular block, predict a break-in or tell us where a camera should be mounted.

Millyard and older-home upgrades: inspect before replacing

Manchester’s Heritage Commission maintains Amoskeag Millyard resources and reviews qualifying exterior work in local historic districts. For a property in one of those districts, confirm whether proposed visible equipment or routing needs review before committing to exterior penetrations.

Inside an older building, good existing alarm cable can be an asset. A compatible hybrid system may retain dependable wired contacts while adding wireless protection where opening finished walls would be disruptive. Before reusing it, check condition, identification and compatibility; an old keypad that still lights up does not tell us whether every circuit is sound.

Where masonry, metal construction or multiple floors interrupt radio coverage, placement and an actual signal survey matter. Where wired circuits have persistent faults, trace and repair the cause or plan replacement rather than covering the symptom with a new panel. Our wired-versus-wireless comparison explains the maintenance tradeoffs; an existing-system assessment can establish what is worth keeping.

Match cameras and door control to tenant responsibilities

A wide view of a parking area and a clear view of a person entering a door are different camera assignments. We consider image detail, backlighting, night performance, recording duration and who is allowed to review footage. At shared premises, agree on viewing boundaries and account ownership with the property owner; avoid pointing cameras into private living spaces.

For businesses, access control can give employees individual credentials and restrict storage or staff areas without forcing a change of every mechanical key after turnover. The door’s life-safety function still governs the hardware and release arrangement. If a project also changes fire alarm interfaces, coordinate it with the Manchester commercial fire alarm plan.

Know what your quote includes

Send the property type, approximate size, photos of the existing panel and the doors or areas causing concern. We can then separate essential intrusion coverage from optional cameras, access control and water or low-temperature alerts. Ask the proposal to identify monitoring, equipment, installation and future service considerations clearly.

For an initial residential budget, use the home security cost calculator; finished-wall access, existing wiring and actual coverage needs can change the final design. If you manage properties across the area, compare our Bedford security guidance and the New Hampshire service hub.

Manchester security questions

Does an audible-only security alarm need a Manchester permit?

Yes. The city police page includes audible burglary, robbery and panic systems within its permit requirement. Registration and yearly permit administration are handled through the city-linked CryWolf program.

Can one system protect my business while another tenant is open?

Often, with a design that separates the spaces and their users. Review shared entrances, cleaning schedules and ownership of the alarm equipment first. Separate arming areas or systems may be appropriate; the building layout decides which arrangement is practical.

Must I replace all of the old wiring to add app control?

Not necessarily. Compatible, serviceable circuits may be retained. Panel compatibility, the condition of the cable and the communications path should be checked before promising a takeover or quoting a complete replacement.
