24-hour on-call technicians can service anywhere in Maine. When service is needed the same day, we offer statewide same-day service, usually for an additional fee. The office address is a point of contact; it does not define how far our technicians can help.

Maine building and alarm project planning

Code references checked September 27, 2026. The building use, existing conditions and proposed work determine the review path.

Plan fire-system work around the building use

Before a fire alarm project, identify the existing and proposed occupancy, changed rooms or tenant areas, door work and the target opening date. Maine’s State Fire Marshal construction guidance covers public-building construction, renovations affecting fire safety and changes of use. Confirm the municipal and any state review route early, then coordinate the alarm drawings and required inspections with that scope.

Maine code references for project planning

Maine’s building-code rules use the 2021 building, existing-building, residential, energy and mechanical codes with state amendments. Fire alarm and life-safety review also uses the State Fire Marshal’s adopted standards, including NFPA 72 (2019), NFPA 1 (2018) and NFPA 101 (2018). The applicable requirements depend on the building use and proposed work.

Coordinate electrical scope before installation

For electrical installations beginning on or after July 1, 2026, Maine’s Electricians’ Examining Board applies the 2026 National Electrical Code with state amendments. Include any new power supply, circuit or electrified-door work in the project discussion so the electrical and fire-safety review can be coordinated.

A 2026 check for businesses using fuel gas

Effective January 1, 2026, Maine’s fuel-gas detector law also covers business, mercantile and assembly occupancies in rooms containing appliances that combust propane, natural gas or other liquefied petroleum gas. Review the room, appliance and approved detector requirements when planning work. Fuel-gas detection addresses a different hazard from carbon monoxide detection; the law does not by itself require every covered detector to connect to a monitored alarm system.

Questions about getting started

Can you work with my existing security or fire alarm system?

In many cases, some existing equipment can be reused. We first review the panel, devices, condition and communication options. For a commercial fire system, have the latest inspection report and any known deficiencies available so we can assess the work before proposing a takeover or upgrade.

How much will my system cost?

Can one company handle my alarm, cameras, access control and fire inspections?

Yes. Cunningham offers these services for homes, businesses and managed properties. We review the equipment and service needs together, including whether existing systems can be supported and whether any parts need to remain separate.

Is alarm monitoring the same as someone watching my cameras?

No. Alarm monitoring, camera viewing and recording, video verification and proactive video monitoring are different services. Tell us whether you want footage to review, alerts, or an operator response so we can explain the appropriate equipment and service plan.

What should I send when I request a quote?

Start with the property location, the type of building and the services you are considering. Let us know about any existing system, planned renovation or deadline. Panel photos and inspection reports can help later, but you do not need a finished equipment list to start the conversation.
