Is a Qolsys Security System Good? Strengths, Limits and Model Choices

Qolsys is a strong option when you want a professionally supported alarm system with compatible wireless sensors, remote access and smart-home control. Its value depends on the model, the equipment around it and the provider who configures and supports the complete system.

Cunningham installs and supports Qolsys systems. This assessment explains where the platform fits, where another approach may be preferable and what to ask before accepting a proposal.

Buying in 2026? Johnson Controls issued a May 11, 2026 North American discontinuation notice for listed IQ4-family part numbers, with IQ5-family replacements. Existing IQ4 owners should distinguish product availability from the ongoing condition and service status of their installed systems.

Qolsys equipment, Alarm.com and your provider do different jobs

Qolsys makes control equipment and related security products. In an Alarm.com-connected installation, the panel receives signals from supported devices, while the service platform provides enabled remote functions. Your security company designs the coverage, activates services, arranges monitoring and handles customer support.

Alarm.com's explanation of its provider model is useful here: the provider selects and installs equipment and activates the account. Buying a Qolsys panel alone does not include a monitoring agreement, active cellular service or every app feature.

That division makes two proposals with the same panel name meaningfully different. One might cover all accessible openings with tested communications and a clear response plan; another might contain fewer detectors or omit a feature you expected.

Which Qolsys family should you compare?

Where the platform adds useful value

A control interface the household can use

For a family system, ask to see ordinary tasks: checking an open door, arming for bedtime, managing a guest's access and finding an alert. A convenient panel location and understandable zone names often matter more day to day than a long specification list. A screen-free model needs an equally clear plan for how people operate it.

Wireless options that can suit finished homes

Current IQ5 products include PowerG+ and support approved legacy RF options through add-on cards, according to the IQ Panel 5 documentation. That can give an installer choices for new sensors and suitable existing equipment.

In a home with plaster walls, an addition or a detached garage, radio specifications are only the starting point. Have the proposed locations tested before committing to wireless coverage. A legacy sensor does not gain encryption merely because it reports to a newer panel, and no radio eliminates interference or every building-related obstacle.

Remote access with a clear response plan

The useful question is what happens after an event. Which alerts go to you, which signals go to professional monitoring, and who can enter the property if you are away? Our remote access service explains the everyday controls; professional monitoring is a separate staffed response function.

Automation selected around actual needs

Compatible locks, lights and other devices can make an alarm system easier to live with. Ask for the exact device and function you want demonstrated. A radio standard, familiar brand or app logo does not mean every accessory or feature is supported.

Video as part of the service design

Discuss supported cameras, recording requirements and subscription features separately from the panel. A built-in panel camera, where included, is not a replacement for planned entrance or driveway coverage. Our Alarm.com camera guide covers those decisions.

Environmental protection can matter more than convenience

For a seasonal New England home, decide where low-temperature or leak detection is needed, who receives an alert and who can respond locally. Remote thermostat control does not establish that a vulnerable pipe area is warm. Include a separate environmental protection assessment when freeze or water damage is a concern.

The strengths and tradeoffs to weigh

Good reasons to consider it

  • A coordinated security and remote-access platform.
  • Wireless installation options for existing finished spaces.
  • Model choices for different interfaces and system architectures.
  • A professional service relationship for design, testing and support.

Costs and limits to plan for

  • Recurring services and some feature-specific charges.
  • Battery maintenance and periodic testing.
  • Model, firmware and accessory compatibility checks.
  • Communication and power limits during outages.

Compare complete installed systems. A simpler stand-alone alarm may suit someone who wants only local warning. A hybrid design may suit extensive existing wiring. A different automation platform may be preferable if your primary goal is custom local integrations rather than a supported alarm service.

Evaluate the provider as well as the panel

The company that designs and services the system has a major effect on day-to-day ownership. Ask who handles training, software updates, warranty issues and recurring faults. When reading customer reviews, separate comments about a panel feature from concerns about a particular provider's billing, installation or support.

During a consultation, ask to see the interface, discuss the actual coverage plan and review the support process. Those checks are more useful than an unsupported claim that everyone finds a system easy to use.

Compare these items in a Qolsys quote

  1. Equipment: full panel model, sensors by type and location, receivers, additional keypads and power supplies.
  2. Reuse: a list of devices and wiring to retain, with exceptions identified.
  3. Communications: the cellular carrier and any second path, checked at the installation location.
  4. Services: professional monitoring, app features, video and automation, with recurring charges clearly separated.
  5. Handover: testing, user training, user permissions and instructions for getting service.
  6. Ownership: warranty, agreement term, battery maintenance and the process if you later change providers.

Use our home security cost calculator as a planning tool, then confirm the selected model and scope in a written proposal. A panel-only internet price cannot be compared directly with an installed and supported system.

Keep the system useful after installation

Keep zone descriptions and emergency contacts current. Arrange testing through your provider, act on battery or communication faults and review firmware and accessory requirements before buying additions. Check the provider's process for software updates rather than assuming every release installs automatically.

For an existing Qolsys system, gather the model, software version if readily available and a description of the problem. Use the manual library for the correct user guide or request service. A recurring fault calls for diagnosis, not an automatic panel upgrade.

Is Qolsys the right choice for your property?

It deserves consideration when you want professional security, compatible connected devices and a provider to help maintain the system. The decision should follow your floor plan, existing equipment, communication coverage and day-to-day needs.
